How to frame a question and its aesthetic consequences
The economy of images, the construction of language
Between phenomenon, translation and research
Between drawings and diagrams, maps and itineraries
The triangulation of information, notational systems and the politics of aesthetics

PROMPT

Inspired by the UAG exhibition ‘Anomalia’ (visit required), How to visualize process, phenomena? Can the ‘information’ embedded on ‘something’ or ‘someone’ be material for art, a new language?

This prompt addresses the need to continue processing the struggles and issues embedded in work 3. This will take the form of a diagram or map.
Use this prompt as a trigger for visualizing the content of work 3

-       as aesthetic information
-       as a system of relationships.

Inspired by the Erik Mayenberg lecture and exhibition (or your criticisms of his approach), deeply consider, extract, and aesthetically communicate the content of your 3rd work. Think of this as an exercise in mental navigation and mapping. It may well expand to become a diagram of your broader interests and self, this being integral anyway to work 3.

Through the content of this ‘map’ please consider:

-       issues of time and process/ your itinerary
-       sites/ location (s)
-       materials, material agencies
-       physical interactions with environments/ others
-       lingual interactions with environments/ others
-       effects of work, on varying scales
-       arising contradictions, paradoxes
-       questions/ unsolved dilemmas
-       re-occurring tropes, themes, motivations

Do not be tempted to use this ‘flattening’ of process as a means of reducing and oversimplifying the struggles of work 3. On the contrary, this is about exploring and continuing to struggle with the contradictions, paradoxes, and unlikely relationships that arise thematically, and through the physical performance of project 3. This is an exercise in triangulation, and through a process of montage, creating your own language. It is about the discovery of new relationships and unlikely linkages within your work.

This should help you think clearly, and provide a web-like support for you to work from in the future.

n.b. I am giving you this prompt early, as many of you mentioned you felt rushed by the previous assignments. This should give you time to plan thoroughly, and discuss thoughts with each other and myself.
